Physics pendulum lab perplexes AP students

by Rojas Oliva, entertainment editor

The floors of physics teacher Michelle Jedlicka’s room were plastered with glue, paint, toy cars and water bottles suspended from metersticks on Thursday, Nov. 21. Her AP Physics C students completed a lab in which they created self-graphing pendulums demonstrating simple harmonic motion and how a pendulum’s period and its length relate.

Pairs of students attached lengths of paper to toy cars that ran under their pendulums. Lab groups were allowed some creativity in how the motion of their pendulums was graphed, resulting in colorful graphs, glitter and one group’s decision to hang a full Gatorade bottle from the ceiling.
