The Roar keeps you updated with local news, recent events and interesting stories ― everything you need to know for this week.

1. This Thursday, a referendum will be held in the United Kingdom over whether to leave the European Union.  The EU is a political and economic partnership that includes 28 countries.

2. Actor Anton Yelchin died in a car accident Sunday morning. He was famous for his roll as Chekov in “Star Trek;” Yelchin was 27.

3. President Obama and the first family visited Yosemite and other national parks.  Obama’s administration has protected over 265 million acres of land and water.

4. The Cleveland Cavaliers won the NBA championship for the first time in 52 years.  They beat the Golden State Warriors in the 7th game.

5. Vigils are being held around the world for the victims of the Orlando attacks.  At one vigil near Orlando, over 50,000 people attended. More details from the ongoing investigation are being released, including 911 calls.

6. Donald Trump fired his campaign manager Corey Lewandowski, signaling Trump’s effort to reset his campaign before the general election.

7. The U.S. beat Ecuador 2-1 in quarter-finals of the Copa América cup. The U.S. will now be playing Argentina in the semi-finals in Houston on Tuesday, June 21.  The match will be difficult for the U.S. because Alejandro Bedoya, Jermaine Jones and Bobby Woo are all suspended from the game.

8. The Iraqi army retook the city of Fallujah from ISIS this past week. Forces are continuing to fight remaining ISIS militants who had controlled this city.  Fallujah fell to ISIS 2 1/2 years ago and is only 40 miles from Baghdad.

9. Senator Chris Murphy, a Democrat from Connecticut,  filibustered for 15 hours over the lack of action on gun control, brought once again to the forefront as a result of the Orlando shooting.

1o. Member of the British Parliament, Jo Cox, was attacked and killed in a reportedly targeted attack. The killing brought a short stop to the intense battles over the upcoming referendum.
