Ten things to know for the week: June 6

1. Over this past weekend, about 5,000 people were evacuated from their homes in Los Angeles county while hundreds of firefighters try to tame a fire started around 4 pm PT on Saturday. The blaze started when a pickup truck collided with a power pole on Mulholland Highway in Calabasas.

2. Boxing legend Muhammad Ali died on Friday at age 74 at a hospital in Phoenix, Arizona. He had been suffering from Parkinson’s disease, which attacks and weakens the respiratory system.

3. In recent years, many countries in the South China Sea have been fighting over territory. China and the United States have accused each other of militarizing the waterway. Defense Secretary Ash Carter and many other top U.S. officials warned China of the risk of isolating itself internationally on Saturday.

4. On Friday, the first lady presented her last commencement speech at the City College of New York. During her speech she praised the school for its diversity, noting that the students at the college come from 150 countries and speak more than 100 languages.

5. Samsung revealed its first-ever cordless earbuds on Thursday called Gear IconX. The earbuds can play music with or without a phone, have 4 GB of internal storage, can take calls when paired with a phone via Bluetooth, and can stream Spotify, Pandora, and Google Music through a Bluetooth-connected smartphone. The headphones are currently priced at $200.

6. Denver Broncos cornerback Aqib Talib was shot in the leg and is currently in a hospital in Dallas. It is believed that Talib was injured in a nightclub in Dallas early Sunday morning.

7. On Sunday, 77% of voters in Switzerland rejected a proposal to provide income to all Swiss residents, employed or not. The plan was to give a basic monthly income of approximately 2,500 Swiss francs to each adult (around $2,560), and 625 francs for each child under the age of 18. The government proposed this in order to fight poverty and social inequality.

8. Donald Trump attacked U.S. District Judge Gonzalo Curiel, the federal judge who is  presiding over the fraud lawsuits against Trump University. In an interview with the Wall Street Journal, Trump said that Curiel had an “absolute conflict” in presiding over these cases given that he was “of Mexican heritage” and a member of a Latino lawyers’ association.

9. Disney Animation Studios’ Zootopia is one of four animated movies in history to reach $1 billion in the global box office. It is also the second film of 2016 to reach this milestone, after Captain America: Civil War.

10. A new photo of the dwarf planet, Pluto, released by NASA shows rugged mountains, nitrogen ice plains and a probably giant cloud floating through its skies.
