- Texas cities are in fear of running out of water. In July, the state legislature of Texas voted unanimously to require the state water planning board to consult with the state climatologist as it advises cities in planning to meet the state’s water needs in the future.

- Democrat Mary Petola wins Alaska special election against Sarah Palin. Petola won the only special election for Alaska’s only US house seat, and will become the first alaska native to serve in the house. She will serve the remaining months of the late US representative, Don Young’s term.
