  1. Presidential candidates Donald Trump (R) and Hillary Clinton (D) have their first debate at Hofstra University in New York on Monday night. Trump and Clinton are set to debate the economy, national security and foreign policy in six segments, each lasting 15 minutes. Monday’s debate comes amidst new polls that show both candidates are nearly tied. The debate will be moderated by NBC News anchor Lester Holt.
  2. Violence in Syria has escalated as the regime of President Bashar al-Assad and his allies continued to bombard the rebel-controlled city of Aleppo on Monday, despite efforts by the United States and Russia to broker a cease fire in the region.
  3. An Air Force colonel who was facing court-martial for multiple counts of sexual assault was found dead on Sunday. Col. Eugene Marcus Caughey reportedly committed suicide according to Air Force officials. Caughey was facing charges of rape, assault, and adultery and was scheduled to be court-martialed on October 17.
  4. A lone gunman injured nine and killed one in a deadly shooting in Houston on Monday. The gunman was killed in a shootout with police and was later identified as an attorney who was disgruntled over affairs at the firm where he worked.
  5. Miami Marlins pitcher José Fernandez was killed in a boating accident on Sunday. Fernandez was found dead after his boat flipped over when it hit a rocky jetty. Fernandez was 24.
  6. The Charlotte police department released video footage of the shooting of Keith Lamont Scott on Saturday after weeklong protests.
  7. Golfing legend Arnold Palmer died on Sunday at age 87. Palmer, who began golfing at age 4, won more than 90 golf tournaments, including the Masters, U.S and British Open. Palmer is credited with transforming golf from a country club activity into a world renowned sport.
  8. A man who was missing at sea for more than a week was found adrift on the Massachusetts coast on Sunday. The man, Nathan Carman, was on a fishing trip with his mother when the boat began taking on water. Carman’s mother has not been found.
  9. Technology company Lenovo announced Monday that it would lay off another thousand employees from its Motorola mobile phone division. These layoffs follow Lenovo’s acquisition of Motorola from Google in October of 2014.
  10.  Scientists at NASA reported findings Monday that indicate plumes of water vapor erupting from the surface of Jupiter’s moon Europa. Scientists have shown interest in Europa due to the ocean that lies beneath its ice covered surface. If water vapor is emitting from the surface, it suggests that exploration of that ocean would be possible without drilling through ice.
