The Roar interviewed senior Waylon Roosma and junior Avery Wright. The two have taken the role of school mascot this year, and are the first to ‘mascot’ in the newly purchased suits.
Have you ever been mascot before?
WR: This is my second year.
AW: It’s my first year.
What is different about the suits this year?
WR: Last year we had 2 of pretty much the same suit. They were a little bit lower quality last year, so we put jerseys over the body. But this year, the mascot suit that I wear has a six pack and really large pecs, so you don’t have to wear a jersey over it.
AW: Basically, last year, the mascots suits had the body of my (current) mascot, and the head of his (current suit). I wear the wimpy one, and we are going to put a jersey over that because its only a little bit pathetic.
What are the mascots’ new names?
WR: There has been quite a discussion about that. The Consol cheer page on twitter came out and said ‘Since we have new mascots, we’re going to give new names to them.’ I thought it would be funny to say ‘Hey, let’s do ‘Waylon’ as the name,’ because that’s my name. I thought it would be funny, and other people started to do it, and a lot of people are on my side, saying ‘Waylon’ should be the new name. But the head cheer coach, Mrs. Cope, doesn’t think so. So, we don’t really know what the new names are going to be…. I’m graduating next year, so I think that it would be really cool if ‘Waylon’ would be the next name, just to carry on the legacy.
Why did you decide to become the mascot?
WR: Last year I was in the theater program at our school. Mr. Rodriguez is really good friends with the teachers here, and one of them is Mrs Key, now Mrs. Cope. She said, ‘hey, any of you want to do the mascot’, and so Dalton Kupferer and I decided to do the mascot. He graduated, so now (I’m the mascot).
AW: It sounds stupid, but ever since 6th grade, I really wanted to be the mascot. I saw an opportunity, because I was friends with both Waylon and Dalton, and we talked about beforehand how maybe after Dalton graduates, I can take his place.
Whats your favorite thing to do?
WR: I really enjoy pep rallies. First of all, it is less time in the suit. Also, there are so many more activities that you can be a part of. At football games. You’re just in the suit for 15 minutes, and there’s nothing you can do other than cheer.
AW: The most exciting things you do at football games is run across the field whenever they get a touchdown, which is pretty exhausting. I haven’t done it yet, but so far I’ve found pep rallies to be more fun, considering it’s in the air conditioning.
