Ten things to know for the week: May 16

1. The Brazilian Senate voted to begin the impeachment trial of President Dilma Rousseff.  They accuse Rousseff of breaking budget laws.  The chamber of deputies already voted to begin impeachment proceedings.

2. Donald Trump meant with Paul Ryan in Washington DC.  They meant after Ryan expressed concerns over supporting Trump, and after the meeting they released a joint statement declaring their commitment to work together to best benefit the party.

3. More than 90 people were killed after a car bomb exploded and several attacks took place in Baghdad, Iraq.  ISIS has claimed responsibility for the attacks.

4. Mercury was in transit across the Sun for the first time in 10 years.  The last time this happened was in 2006, and it will next be visible in 2019.

5. There are protests in Paris over new labor laws which makes it easier to lay off people, and lengthens work days.

6. Elections were held in the Philippines.  Rodrigo Duterte won the presidential election, Leni Robredo won the vice presidential race.  The only female candidate, Robredo campaigned as a defender of the poor, children and women.

7. A judge ruled that Robert Dear, accused of killing three people at a planned parenthood, is mentally incompetent to stand trial.

8. The Cannes film festival took place this week in Cannes, France, attracting big name celebrities.

9.  Donald Trump and Bernie Sanders won the Nebraska presidential primary.  Sander won with 57.1% of the votes getting 15 delegates, and Clinton had 42.9% of the vote receiving 10 delegates.  Donald Trump won 36 delegates.

10. Hundreds of people were stranded at the border of Afghanistan and Pakistan after the borders were closed when the two countries got into a disagreement over fences in Pakistan.
