Ten things to know for the week: September 28

The Roar keeps you updated with local news, recent events and interesting stories ― everything you need to know for this week.

1. Pope Francis completed his first visit to the U.S.  He visited Washington D.C., New York City, and Pennsylvania, where millions of people came to see him, some traveling hundreds of miles. He also met with inmates, 5 victims of sexual assault, and addressed the sexual assault controversy surrounding the church.

2. On Friday, House Speaker Republican John Boehner announced he would resign from Congress at the end of October.  This decision came the day after Pope Francis spoke to Congress.

3. Facing a government shutdown, Congress continues to fight over a provision in spending measures that cuts off funding to Planned Parenthood.  Republicans are pushing to stop funding Planned Parenthood over the issue of abortion.  Senate Democratic leader Harry Reid complained that Republicans are wasting time, as the issue is being voted on again in the Senate.

4. Presidential candidate Ben Carson said this week that he did not think a Muslim was fit to be president of the United States.  He stated that to be president, a person would need to “reject the tenets of Islam.”  These comments faced harsh criticism, but he has also seen a fundraising boost since his comments.

5. Hundreds of people were killed in a stampede during the holiest Muslim pilgrimage, the Hajj.  At least 769 people were killed, and 934 people were injured.  This Hajj has been the the deadliest pilgrimage since 1990.  There is an ongoing investigation over the cause of the stampede.

6. A Palestinian teenager was shot in the stomach and killed by Israeli soldiers at a checkpoint in the west bank.  Israelis report she was attacking the soldiers with a knife but others disagree and say she was trying to shows the soldiers what was in her bag.

7. The Brazos Valley Food bank is finalizing a purchases of a new property.  As the community grew, the Food Bank needed more space for food.  They were originally working to raise $4.1 million dollars to expand their current facility,  but a new option of buying a warehouse currently owned by Kristen Distributing became available, and they decided to purchase it.

8. The Chinese president, Di Xini Ping, visited Seattle and Washington DC this week. He experienced a 21 gun salute outside the White house with President Obama.  The Chinese media has closely covered his trip to the U.S., while in the U.S., media for his trip has been overshadowed by the pope’s visit.

9. The UN general assembly, the world’s largest gathering of world leaders that meets once a year, met this past week.  The assembly included speeches from  Pope Francis, Chinese President Di Xini Ping, as well as Obama and Putin.

10. Iraq will begin sharing data with Russia, Syria, and Iran to help combat ISIS.  This shows Russia’s continued actions to become more involved in the Middle East, after establishing an air base in Syria to support the Syrian president Bashar Al Assad.
