1. The Common App, a college admission application accepted by over 600 schools, went online on August 1st.

2. Nicolette Beard, a College Station woman who attempted to hire a hit-man to murder her ex-boyfriend, was sentenced to 15 years in prison on Friday.

3. Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton has been indicted on three counts of security fraud by a grand jury. Paxton stands accused of misleading investors and failing to register as a solicitor while he was serving in the state House of Representatives.

4. Next week, President Obama will finalize his Clean Power Plan, which will outline CO2 restrictions that individual states will have to implement. This plan is thought to be more restrictive than the proposals put forward by the EPA last June.

5. Officials continue to battle with the massive California blaze that has spanned 47,000 acres and claimed the life of one firefighter.

6. Last week, rapper Snoop Dogg was stopped by Italian police while carrying $422,000 in cash. Police, who suspected Snoop Dogg of drug possession, seized the cash under money laundering laws.

7. Kraft has voluntarily recalled 36,000 cases of Kraft Singles because of a potential choking hazard.

8. Debris collected from an island in the Indian Ocean, possibly from the missing Malaysian Airlines flight MH370, has been sent to France for analysis.

9. Following a case of arson that killed an 18-month Palestinian boy in the West Bank, Israeli officials have vowed to locate the suspected Israeli extremists responsible for the attack.

10. The Taliban pulled out of peace talks with the Afghan government that were to be held in Pakistan on Friday after Afghanistan announced that Mullah Omar, the leader of the Taliban, had died two years ago. Mullah Akhtar Mansoor is thought to be the new Taliban leader.
