With a final score of 5-2, the US overcame Japan within the first few minutes of the game and maintained a strong lead throughout. Midfielder Carli Lloyd made three of the match’s goals, including making the fastest hat-trick in World Cup history in the sixteenth minute. Lloyd will be taking home the Adidas Golden Ball as the tournament’s most outstanding player as well as the Adidas Silver Boot.

“To be honest, I couldn’t really have imagined things turning out better,” USA coach Jill Ellis said. “However, I did know that my players were capable of doing something exceptional. That’s what they were born to do.”
