Environmental Club hosts first ever charity fish fry

by Annie Zhang, executive editor

The Environmental Club held its first charity fish fry and silent auction last Saturday, raising almost $2000 to purchase four clean water packages from Heifer International that will install and teach communities how to use treadle pump systems.

Students began preparations six hours prior to the event, with some gutting and cleaning tilapia and others helping in the kitchen. The latter option certainly wasn’t without its own troubles; one trial run consisted of baking rice in the oven for over an hour. The result? Uncooked rice that was later used for entertainment as play-dough.

Despite the initial difficulties, the students successfully served a home-fried tilapia dinner to over sixty guests. The event was funded by a grant from The Education Foundation and local businesses.
