by Austin Coats, sports editor

One week after defeating College Station High School in an intense atmosphere, the Consol volleyball team found themselves facing another team from the Brazos Valley. In the midst of their breast cancer awareness week, the Tigers, decked out in pink, defeated the Rudder Rangers 3-2.

The first two games were initially close. With the two teams deadlocked at 14-14, the Tigers cruised the rest of the way to take the first game 25-19. Despite a late run by the Tigers, Rudder evened it up in the second game after a seven-point run, winning 25-18. They took their momentum into the third game and capitalized on many of Consol’s mistakes en route to a 19-25 win.

After starting the fourth game down 6-10, the Tigers scored nine straight points on the way to a 25-15 win. Feasting on the excitement of the numerous fans, the Tigers finished the Rangers off in the fifth game, winning 15-13 and shutting down a late comeback attempt.

Junior Haley Slocum led the team with in kills (17) and assists (23), closely followed by senior Christi Corkran (22). Senior Paige Kopetsky had a team-best 27 digs, while seniors Mattie DeWitt and Mindy Hudspeth led in blocks (4 each).

The volleyball team will be back in action at home against Bryan right before the Crosstown Showdown on Friday, Oct. 10.
