The Roar spoke to freshman Kade Flynn, a member of the A&M Consolidated mountain bike team.

So, what do you do?

I ride bikes.

Why/when did you start?

It’s something my whole family does. I started when I was five–that’s a good age.

Could you describe what the team does during the school year?

We have a fall race season and a spring race season, so we’re always doing lots of training for those. We ride throughout the winter. Right now is the high school season, so we have races every other week.

What do you enjoy about mountain biking?

You’re outside a lot. It’s fun. And there’s a really cool community around it.

What does mountain biking become beyond high school?

It really depends on how seriously you take it. Both my brothers race in college: one rides every day (he’s top division and everything) and the other one just does it recreationally.

How do you handle all this along with other extracurriculars?

Well, marching band is during one of the race seasons, and it takes up a lot of time. So time is a problem, because I try to ride every day.

What’s something you’d like everyone to know about mountain biking?

It’s definitely something everyone can do, no matter how seriously you take it.
