The Roar interviewed freshman Hailey Hunter on her involvement as the team manager of the boys track team. Hunter, who is in head coach Kevin Waters’s world history class, volunteers her time after school each day. She says she has bonded with the team and has enjoyed her experience so far this year.
On getting involved:
Well, it started when I was in [Waters’s] class and he wanted me to help him out in cross country and then it started going into track because it was the end of cross country. And then, he wanted me to help him out with all the different timings, help him out with all the different track events that go on, like field and sprinters and distance runners–just help them out, because he can’t do it all on his own.
On what she does:
I mostly do times, but I help them workout, I tell them the stretch routines, help them warm up–it’s just like, the little things.
On commitment:
It gives me something to do, and I love being outside. I come here every day at 4:10 until 5:15, and I used to [do mornings as well].
On getting to know the team better:
At first I didn’t socialize with them at all, but then I got into where I can actually talk to them. Before I started managing, I thought that [running track] was just a thing that you already knew, but some people just come in and not know anything and become really good.
