The Roar talked to freshman Cat Hurtado, a flutist who’s played in the band for four years, about the highs and lows of being in band.

What made you choose to play the flute?

When we were trying out different instruments, this one felt right.

How long have you been in band?

About four years.

What do you find rewarding about band?

Band helps academically with learning about other subjects than just music. I’ve made a lot of friends in band–band is my family.

What can be challenging about band?

It’s challenging because there are a lot of competitions, and you always want to be the best. There’s a lot of pressure to do well.

Do you play any other instruments?

I also play the piccolo.

What other activities do you do outside of band?

I like to draw and sing show tunes around my house.

What are your future plans for band in the future?

I don’t necessarily think I’m going to major in music, but I would like to do college ensemble.
