From its chilling beginning to its shocking last scene, “Alice Goes Down the Rabbit Hole” is a mind-blowing delight from start to finish, entertaining viewers with its lighthearted parts and touching on dark topics that one would have never expected to be so artfully performed by a high school theatre.
“Alice Goes Down the Rabbit Hole” is a seemingly innocent play following the adventures of the classic novel Alice in Wonderland. However, the one big plot twist at the end is what makes this play so intriguing and unique from every other adaption of the novel.
The acting was superb, and, other than the occasional stutter, the actors and actresses seemed perfectly at ease. Senior Tara Lokke, playing Alice, gave a flawless performance, and the characters Tweedledum and Tweedledee provided comic relief that had the whole audience giggling. In addition, junior Savannah Barrera expertly played the part of the sly Cheshire Cat. All the actors and actresses did a wonderful job and never came out of character.
The usually under-appreciated set, lights, and sound were crucial in “Alice,” foreshadowing the last plot twist and giving the play its chilling mood. One of the most effective sets was the very first one, a back wall with the phrase “we are all mad here” scrawled on it with blood red paint. Definitely, this set was one of the creepiest parts of the play and set the mood for the rest of the evening. Sounds and lights were neither overused nor underused, serving their purpose in highlighting important moments in “Alice”.
At a comfortable one hour and 15 minutes, this play is the perfect length for some unusual evening entertainment. While you might not want to bring a five-year-old sibling to it, “Alice Goes Down the Rabbit Hole” will make you wonder what it really means to be sane.
Tiger Theatre will perform “Alice Goes Down the Rabbit Hole” again on Friday and Saturday night at 7 pm. Tickets for students are $5, and $7 for adults.
