New ‘Ender’s Game’ movie thrills, surprises viewers

Never having read the book Enders Game by Orson Scott Card, I didn’t know what to expect of the movie. The movie takes place in the future and focuses on Ender Wiggins, a unique kid who is recruited to help save the earth from an alien attack.

From the moment I sat down, I paid close attention. The fresh faces of Hollywood filled the screen. Other than well-known actor Harrison Ford, very few actors and actresses were familiar to me. The plot starts off a little slow, but with good reason–there was plenty of background information and character development that people who haven’t read the book needed.

Even though the movie revolves around teenagers, the usual problems of being a teen are not so shallowly conveyed. The movie takes a darker coming of age view, grappling with having to make hard decisions and dealing with the consequences.

Though the movie was almost two hours long, it gripped my attention the entire time. Each part was important in contributing to the storyline, and the shocking finish left an impact that could be heard throughout the theater in gasps.

In short: the movie is exciting and attention getting, albeit a little lengthy. It ends with a twist that leaves the viewer reevaluating how far humanity would go to save itself.
