The Roar spoke to freshman basketball player Emily Garrett about the upcoming basketball season, her practice schedule and her relationship with her teammates.

What position do you most frequently play, and what’s the best part of playing that position?

I play wing; the best part about playing it is shooting on the outside.

Since the season hasn’t started yet, what do you work on in practice during school? What will you need to improve on before the season starts?

We have been working on getting conditioned for the season by going to the weight room and running a bunch. I personally will need to work on ball handling the most.

Are you looking forward to after-school practice starting? Why or why not?

Yes, I’m very excited for after school practice to begin! I’ll be able to have more competition with the JV and varsity girls.

Which one of your teammates do you look up to the most? Why?

I look up to Jamyra [McIntosh] and Tori [Carraway], because they are great examples and very encouraging.

Since basketball season hasn’t started yet, what are you most looking forward to about the upcoming season?

I’m excited for the upcoming games and tournaments. I hope this season will go well and [there will be] lots of team bonding.

Do you want to play basketball after high school? If so, where would you like to play and how do you plan to get there?

I haven’t decided whether or not I want to play in college, but if I don’t, I would still love to stick with sports and major in sports medicine.

How do your teammates and your coaches motivate you, and vice versa?

My coaches and teammates motivate me by making sure I’m always giving my all and never slacking in practice. Congratulating my teammates whenever they make a shot or a good defensive stop is one way I motivate my teammates.

What do non-basketball players not understand about the sport or your team, and what would you tell them?

Some may not understand that defense and teamwork wins games in basketball. Also communication is huge in the game!

What is the most exciting moment of a basketball game?

The most exciting part of a game is when a teammate is doing really well on both sides of the court and of course winning!

When is your first home game, so Consol can watch you play?

The first Consol home game should be around October to November.
