On Friday, Sept. 6, the entirety of Consol’s girls volleyball team stood together in their blue cotton ‘Stand Tall’ shirts and raised their voices to a unifying ‘Point Tigers!’ to match every single announcement of ‘Point Consol’, the stands littered with not just the customary parents and families but also teachers, administrators, janitors and students came together in captive attention as the girls’ varsity volleyball team gathered to play George Bush High’s Broncos, beating them with a final score of three sets to none.
Consol won the first two sets with more than double the points, and it wasn’t until the final third set that things were tense. Even the tension in the third set, however, was a momentary period on a clear road to victory for Consol.
George Bush High’s Broncos orange ‘ALL IN’ warm-up jerseys foreshadowed a strong defense, but ultimately they were unable to restrain Consol’s attacks during the first set as Consol took an early 10-0 lead. Senior middle blocker Kaycey Cermin performed a few gravity-defying spikes that left the final score at 25-10, giving the set to Consol.
Except for the long disputed battle of point 13-4 that had the bleachers at their most vocal (which eventually went to Consol) the set moved along quickly, Consol ending the set with a final score of 25-9.
With eventual scores like 14-12 and 17-14, a tough third set announced the arrival of some more confident Broncos. Point 10-9 was another long competition; senior outside hitter Kelly Williams made a great save that allowed her to later end the point with a killer spike. The set went to Consol at 25-16 and ended the match after only three sets.
Throughout the game middle blockers junior Mattie Dewitt and senior Kaycey Cermin did their best to create an impenetrable wall at the net. Senior right side hitter Jordan Dickson stopped many Broncos returns with some great bumps, as senior outside hitter Ashlynn Ford consistently spiked off of sets by defensive hitters junior Paige Kopetsky and sophomore Haley Slocum.
“I was really proud that all of the players had a chance to contribute,” Coach McMillian said. “Our chemistry looked good.”
In the end, the varsity volleyball team (ranked tenth in the state) came out ahead, with a final score of 3-0.
