1. “Daily Show” Comedian Hasan Minhaj earned a standing ovation for his performance at the White House Correspondents Dinner. In his address, he underscored the importance of the free press for a liberal society. President Trump did not attend the dinner.

2. President Donald Trump has stated that he believes China’s president has been putting pressure on North Korea as it pursues its nuclear weapons programs. However, on April 30th, upon being asked whether he could start a war with North Korea in an interview with CBS, President Trump responded with, ‘I don’t know. I mean, we’ll see.’

3. On April 29th, the UN revealed that thirty-six members of the Yazidi religious minority are free after nearly three years in the hands of Islamic State. 

4. Following severe storms and tornadoes that hit the South, at least 10 people were killed and dozens more were injured in Arkansas, Missouri and a region of Texas east of Dallas.

5. A new Pentagon report found the over 352 innocent civilians have been killed by artillery and airstrikes in the U.S. coalition fighting ISIS in Iraq and Syria since 2014. 

6. On April 29th, a shark attacked a woman near San Onofre State Beach in northern San Diego County. The woman was wading in the ocean with her friends, when the shark tore away part of her upper thigh off.

7. Police in Southern California have arrested a man and a woman in connection with a shooting at a hotel. This shooting may be connected to a series of attacks on the 29th in the Los Angeles area that killed one man and injured three other people. 

8. While preparing to climb Mount Everest, 40-year-old mountain climber Ueli Steck died in an accident while training for an attempt on the mountain without oxygen by a new route. Known as the “Swiss Machine,” Steck was recognized for his rapid ascents and won numerous awards in his lifetime. 

9. Renown American entrepreneur Elon Musk has outlined his goal for a tunnel network under Los Angeles and demonstrated the process. He told the Ted conference he plans fully autonomous network across the United States within the next year. 

10. Despite a positive public front, congressional Republicans have voiced frustrations that President Trump’s tax announcement presented on Wednesday lacks crucial aspects essential to secure the first massive tax reform in over 30 years.
