1. Five people were killed at an airport in Fort Lauderdale, Fla. in a shooting on Saturday. Authorities captured 26-year-old Esteban Ruiz Santiago after he killed five and injured at least six others with a handgun stashed in his luggage.

2. Republicans are set to open confirmation hearings on Tuesday in order to approve cabinet members nominated by President-elect Donald Trump. Democrats are expected to attempt to delay the hearings until after all the nominees have passed F.B.I background checks.

3. Four suspects have been charged with the kidnapping and torture of a special-needs teen in Chicago that was streamed on Facebook Live. The video caught attention on social media due to the comments made by the attackers about white people and President-elect Donald Trump, which were directed at the kidnapped teenager. 

4. Protests have broken out in Mexico City after gas prices rose by 20%. In a speech, President Enrique Peña Nieto argued that the government had no choice but to raise prices. 

5. Authorities arrested a suspect connected to the shooting of a US diplomat in Mexico. The diplomat is reported to be in stable condition.

6. Martin Shkreli, who previously caused controversy for raising the price of lifesaving HIV drugs, was suspended from Twitter after harassing Teen Vogue writer Lauren Duca. 

7. The Golden Globes were held on Sunday, January 8th, hosted by Jimmy Fallon. The winners included Emma Stone for best actress in “La La Land”, Viola Davis for best-supporting actress in “Fences”, and Donald Glover for his role in “Atlanta”. 

8. Firefighters fought off a grass fire that came dangerously close to a house on Sunday afternoon. Officials have not yet determined a cause of the fire. 

9. Google spin-off company Waymo has announced that it will deploy its fleet of self-driving minivans on the roads later this month. 

10. Awesome Games Done Quick, the annual speedrunning celebration, began Sunday. AGDQ is a week long event in which players attempt to finish video games as fast as possible while raising money for charity. This years’ AGDQ will raise money for the Prevent Cancer Foundation.
