Ten things to know for the week: May 9

1. Last week marked the beginning of AP tests, exams measuring student achievement in their advanced courses. Testing will continue through this week.

2. Puerto Rico failed to pay back a $422 million debt installment due last Monday. Since it is a U.S. territory, the island nation is not allowed to restructure its debt. Puerto Rican officials say the struggling country will only be able to relieve its $72 billion debt with legislative help from Congress.

3. In what was heralded as “the biggest sporting shock of a lifetime,” last Monday Leicester City beat out 19 other English soccer teams and won the Premier League championship title. Last year Leicester was a favorite to be sent to relegated to a lower division, and the team’s odds of winning were set at 5,000-1.

4. Ted Cruz dropped out of the presidential race after an overwhelming loss to Donald Trump in the Indiana primary last Tuesday.

5. Broadway hit “Hamilton” has once again made theatrical history. On Tuesday, the musical set a record of 16 Tony Award nominations.

6. On Wednesday, the city of Flint, Michigan welcomed President Obama to hear their concerns concerning its current water crisis.

7. The U.S. and Russia reached an agreement Thursday negotiating a cease-fire in Syria, where government officials have been clashing with rebels in Aleppo.

8. North Korea’s convention last Friday was the first in over 40 years. Current leader Kim Jong-Un convened the meeting and focused most of his speech time on the country’s recent nuclear tests.

9. Last Saturday the Mexican drug lord known widely as “El Chapo” was transferred to a prison near the U.S. border, causing speculation that American authorities would soon attempt extradition.

10. Scientists say that the climate phenomenon El Niño is responsible for the outbreak of wildfires in Canada this week. Several communities in the country’s oil sands region were evacuated as flames advanced.
