Ten things to know for the week: March 7

1. Last Tuesday was Super Tuesday, where 11 states and territories held their primary elections. Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump swept the majority of the states, and thus delegates, for their respective parties.

2. Google will be donating $1 million to fight the spread of Zika, a virus has been linked to a very rare form of paralysis and birth defects. Currently, three cases of Zika in Texas have been reported.

3. This past Saturday marked the first time high school students will be taking the new and redesigned SAT, which includes an optional essay and a departure from its infamous “SAT word list.”

4. GOP incumbent John Raney won the primary election for state representative against newcomer Jess Fields.

5. Nour Hilai, Mehr Khan, Nooran Riaz and Janisah Saripada recently advanced to the state HOSA-Future Health Professionals contest by earning a spot at the Area 2 HOSA Spring Leadership Contest. The state contest will be held in Galveston in April.

6. American astronaut Scott Kelly spent one year in space doing research for NASA. Additionally, he and his twin are being studied to observe the way different environments affect the expression of genes.

7. Andrew Holness is sworn in as Jamaica’s new Prime Minister, beating out Portia Simpson Miller, the nation’s first female head of government.

8.  The 11th Republican debate was held on Thursday, where frontrunner Donald Trump came under heavy attack from Ted Cruz and Marco Rubio while responding to Mitt Romney’s accusations. Ben Carson did not attend the debate, telling supporters “does not see a political path forward in light of last evening’s Super Tuesday primary results,” but has not yet suspended his campaign.

9. A federal magistrate judge in New York rejected the U.S. government’s request as part of a drug case to force Apple to help it extract data from a locked iPhone, a significant boost to Apple’s well-publicized campaign to resist the FBI’s similar efforts in the case of the San Bernardino killers.

10. Rapper Kendrick Lamar releases surprise new album, ‘Untitled Unmastered,’ available on Apple Music, iTunes, Spotify, and Tidal. It contains eight tracks all titled with the phrase “untitled.”
