The Roar keeps you updated with local news, recent events and interesting stories ― everything you need to know for this week:

1. Social media and news sites are buzzing after yesterday night’s Democratic Debate between nominees Hillary Clinton, Bernie Sanders, and Martin O’Malley. The three discussed topics such as big corporations and banks, health care and gun violence.

2. After 18 months of imprisonment in an Iranian prison, Washington Post reporter Jason Rezaian was released on Saturday and met with Post editors today to discuss his experience. Recovering in an U.S. military hospital, he has stated that he is “feeling good.”

3. After months of plummeting gas prices, a Michigan gas station has hit an all-time low: 47 cents per gallon. These low prices are due to the lifting of Iran sanctions causing a huge influx of gasoline in the market. This is the first time gas has dropped below $1 in a decade.

4. The British parliament is currently having an unusual debate: whether or not to ban Republican front-runner Donald Trump from visiting the country. Many members argue that allowing Trump into the country could encourage Islamophobia and could be “damaging, it would be dangerous, it would be deeply divisive.” However, others say that the debate is ridiculous, and they would rather not risk banning a candidate for the president of the United States.

5. African-American director Spike Lee has refused to attend this year’s Oscars, as all 20 acting nominees are white for the second consecutive year.

6. Global stocks continue dropping as people question China’s economy and oil prices plummet. Last Friday, the DOW alone fell nearly 400 points.

7. Northwestern University’s president, Morton Schapiro, published a column supporting “safe spaces” for African-American students, the newest addition to weeks of controversy surrounding the issue. In his column, he referenced an anecdote where a group of African-American students didn’t allow two white students to sit with them during lunch after the white students stated their reason for sitting with them as wanting “uncomfortable learning.”

8. Astronauts at the International Space Station have recently grown the first plant in outer space. It’s a zinnia, and it’s gosh-darn pretty.

9. During 2015 and until now, the Zika virus has run rampant in South America and is now beginning to spread to North and Central America. This virus, carried by mosquitoes, causes microcephaly, a rare condition in which babies have smaller heads than usual.

10. Researchers from Reuters Health have determined that eating three large servings of fish each week during pregnancy might benefit their child’s brain development.
