Junior Daniel Cho, along with passionately playing soccer, also enjoys participating in “Consoltimate,” the Ultimate Frisbee club at Consol. Through the sport’s enjoyable activities, Cho has created a successful club that encourages exercise and fun.

Why did you start the club?

I started the club because I wanted to continue the legacy of fellow seniors who graduated two years ago, and I also felt that a lot of people liked to play Ultimate [Frisbee], but they never had the opportunity because it does require a large number of people to actually get a game going.

What exactly is Ultimate Frisbee?

Ultimate Frisbee is basically football, except there’s no contact and you can’t run once you catch the Frisbee. So you run down the field, try to score a touchdown, and once you score you kick it off, etc. You play like football but you use the strategies that are used in soccer. It’s a mix of those two sports. The track guys and soccer guys tend to be the best at Ultimate.

How did you get the idea to make the club?

Well it was an idea… a couple of people told me that they wanted to play so I thought that [Josh Eidson and I] might as well make the club so we can have it consistently going.

What are the relationships within the club like? Are you all close friends?

The core members are the guys I went to Crooked Creek camp with over the summer: Josh [Eidson], Brett [Leopold], Bryce [Nesbitt], and there are nine leaders who show up every week. The [Young Life] leaders show up to play [with us.]

What are your long-term goals for the club?

As of right now we’re just having fun but if we get a consistent group of eight or nine people, we’re thinking about making a team… doing drills, playing competitively, if we get to that level. I’m sure there are [local competitions] because the seniors that did it two years ago did participate in competitions.

Do you guys have t-shirts?

We have Consoltimate t-shirts that we’re working on if people want to get one. We also, if we do get a competitive team going, want to get a uniform.

What is your relationship with the club sponsor like?

The sponsor right now, [Mr. Brooks], was also the sponsor even two years ago so we just got back in contact with him and started it up again. He plays with us and he’s actually really, really good.

What does Ultimate Frisbee mean to you personally?

I think it defines a part of who I am. And I think it’s a club that’s not like all the other clubs where you do community service or help people out or just do something for the school…rather, you do something for yourself and you actually get to run around. You get to be active. Most of the clubs at our school involve meeting together in a classroom and talking about things. Well this is more of you meet outside and actually play. It’s a different kind of club.

How do you plan on attracting more people to the club?

Well, we want as many people as possible to show up. Like one time we had 40 people show up so we got two games going. It was pretty cool. We play on the practice field, so we can pretty much have an unlimited amount [of players.]
