Ten things to know for the week: September 14

1. North and South Korea began talks on Monday concerning the reunion of the countries that have been separated since the early 1950s. The talks come after an exchange of cross-fire at the border last month.

2. Last Tuesday marked the end of  Kim Davis’ 5 day jail sentence. The Kentucky county clerk defied the Supreme Court’s June ruling and refused to issue same-sex marriage licenses. Texas Senator Ted Cruz and former Arkansas governor Mike Huckabee were among those who attended a rally outside the jail upon her release from police custody.

3. On Tuesday presidential candidate Hillary Clinton apologized for the first time for using a private email during her time as Secretary of State. “I understand that you may have more questions, and I am going to work to keep answering them,” Clinton wrote in a Facebook post.

4. In San Francisco last Wednesday, Apple unveiled its new iPad Pro, which boasts a 12.9 inch retina display. The iPhone 6S and fourth-generation Apple TV were also launched alongside the new laptop-sized tablet.

5. Texas A&M anthropology professor Darryl de Ruiter was part of the team that made a groundbreaking discovery in Africa on Thursday. Scientists say the skeletons found in the South African cave belong are evidence of an ancient species of the human family tree, which has been named Homo naledi.

6. Last Friday Italy’s Roberta Vinci stopped Serena Williams from completing the first calendar Grand Slam since 1988. #BlameDrake trended on Twitter after fans pointed out that the rapper’s attendance had resulted in crowd favorite’s losses before.  

7. More than 100,000 people in Japan were forced to leave their homes  on Friday after rain so heavy it tore houses from their foundations. Some areas received twice the average amount of September rain in just 48 hours.

8. This Friday marked the 14th anniversary of the September 11th terrorist attacks. President Obama and the first lady observed a moment of silence on the South Lawn at 8:46, when the first plane crashed into the World Trade Center. Americans throughout the country held commemorative services in honor of the thousands of lives lost.

9. On Saturday Jeremy Corbyn was elected leader of Britain’s Labour party with one of the most overwhelming majority of votes in British political history. Corbyn took 59.5% of the votes, with his second competitor Andy Burnham taking only 19%.

10. The Texas A&M Aggies defeated the Ball State Cardinals 56-23 on Saturday in the first home game of the season.
