Q&A: Sophomore Kelly Krenek on new Biology Club

Sophomore Kelly Krenek

by Elizabeth Reed, online & photography editor

The Roar spoke to Biology Club member Kelly Krenek about her experiences with the brand-new club.

Why did you join Biology Club?

I became interested in biology club last year. As a freshman in Mrs. Riley’s class, I’d always enjoyed biology, and then I discovered that I could join Biology Club the following year. Of course I joined it.

What  do you like about the club?

My favorite part of Biology Club is that we go beyond classroom learning and prepare to compete in the nationally recognized Bio Olympiad. The looming competition provides an excitement to the material and makes it even more interesting.

Has it helped you with any science classes, and if so, how?

I would say yes, it has helped. When I was studying the textbook this past summer, several chapters explored concepts in more detail than I had learned before and introduced me to topics that I had not yet learned. Some of these concepts have paved the way for better understanding in my current science classes. For example, we are covering electron orbitals in chemistry right now and the material is already familiar to me. Additionally, I hope that a foundation in biology will allow me to improve my grades and understanding when I take AP [biology].

Are you part of any more science-related clubs?

At the moment, I am unfortunately not a member of any other science clubs. However, I hope to be a larger part of the science community at Consol in the future.

What benefits come from being a member of Biology Club?

For me, the benefits include a greater knowledge of biology and a better understanding of scientific thought processes.

What are the goals of Biology Club this year? What are your personal goals as a member?

[For Biology Club as a whole] To be ready to compete at Bio Olympiad in the spring. My personal goals in Biology Club are to be prepared for AP Bio next year and to further explore a subject that interests me.

What can students expect to do in Biology Club?

Students can expect to go over a new topic every week. Also, there has been talk of guest speakers and other exciting things, so we’re all looking forward to that.
