Six students advance to state after region UIL academics contest

On Saturday, May 3, students traveled to Baylor University for the UIL Region 2 5A competition. Of the students competing, six will move on to the state competition. The state competition will be held at the University of Texas at Austin on May 20 and 21.

The Current Issues and Events team, comprised of senior *Shankar Srinivasan, junior *Alex Coopersmith, sophomore *Annie Zhang and freshman *Benjamin Lamb, placed first as a team. All four will advance to State as a team.

The journalism team received second place overall.

Students who placed in their individual events are named below:
*Michelle Liu: first place in Literary Criticism and second place in Headline Writing
*Benjamin Lamb: first place in Current Issues and Events
*Stephanie Palazzolo: first place in Ready Writing
*Shankar Srinivasan: fourth place in Current Issues and Events
Dana Branham: fourth place in News Writing (alternate to state)
Brooke Versaw: fourth place in Spelling and Vocabulary (alternate to state)
Sujay Shankar: fifth place in Spelling and Vocabulary
Students whose names are preceded with an asterisk will advance to state.
