The Roar spoke with freshman Jared DeFriend, who just wrapped up his first high school football season. He now moves on to a number of other sports.

So, tell me what you play.

Football, baseball, basketball and track.

How did the transition to the high school level feel with all these sports?

Yeah, it was a lot harder. The football season was okay, but not too good, because we lost a lot.

When did you start playing sports?

Well, I started playing baseball when I was five.

How do you feel you’ve grown as an athlete since then?

Well, I’ve definitely grown a lot since I moved here. I used to live in Fairfield, Texas. College Station has a much better baseball program.

When did you move here?

In seventh grade.

How does College Station compare to Fairfield in other sports?

There weren’t nearly as many. They just had football, basketball and track. That’s it. There was no wrestling or anything like that.

What have you been up to since the end of the football season?

Now, I’m actually doing wrestling. I’ve never wrestled before. It’s kinda hard. It’s fun.

How did you decide to get into wrestling all of a sudden?

I guess I just wanted to try something new.

Juggling all these sports seems like it’d be quite challenging.

Yeah and I’m in band, so I’m just at school for that much longer every day. Everything takes up a lot of time.

How do you handle it all?

Honestly…I don’t. It’s really hard.
